JACQUARD -- A mechanism for making patterns in a Wilton carpet which consists of a cardboard roll with punched holes indicating the colors of the tufts that are to appear in the pile surface of the carpet forming the design. As the holes pass over the mechanism, the
specified color is pulled to the surface at the point of weaving.
JAMB --The side of a door frame, doorway, or window; usually the side on which the opening for the lock is placed.
The vertical unit running up the side of an opening.
JASPE -- Irregular stripes of two hues, shades, or values of the same color used to produce a particular effect on the pile yarn of plain or even designed fabrics. Various jaspe effects can be produced by varying the twist of the
yarn.

Joint --Gap between masonry units filled with mortar or backer rod and sealant.
Jointed flooring -- strip flooring, generally Birch, Beach, and hard maple or
pecan, manufactured with square edges and no tongue or groove, usually end matched. Used principally for factory floors were the square edges make replacement of strips easier.
Jointing Scheme --The jointing pattern shown on contract documents.
JOIST -- one of a series of parallel beams used to support
floor or ceiling loads and supported in turn by larger beams, girders, or bearing walls.
JUTE --A fibrous skin between the bark and stalk of a plant native to India and the Far East. Shredded and spun, it forms a strong and durable yarn used to make carpet backing to add strength, weight, and stiffness.
